Our $20 DIY farmhouse table
Hello!
We've recently gotten some new followers on Istagram and FB, and with that some really nice comments about our kitchen table. This, like all of our furniture in our house (minus the mattresses and couch), was a thrift and DIY/upcycle.
I really wanted a round table for our eat-in kitchen with banquette seating. I searched for a while for one on Facebook Market Place and different thrift stores in the area, but couldn't find any with real wood tops in my budget. Our friends at the time were selling one of their rental houses. In the shop on the property they had amassed a lot of various castoffs from renters and family members. After the family had come and taken what they wanted to keep, Ross and I were invited to pick through some stuff. And there it was! A very large spool. A newphew and I took the top and bottom for tables.
Now if you don't have friends with a spool lying around, no worries. Just do a quick google search on where to find and there are tons of good suggestions to start looking.
I continued searching for a base. And luckily I found a round table with a wood base being sold for $20. Funny how things come to you when you need them, right? The table top was laminate and in sorry condition, but the base was sturdy and just needed paint.
It took quite a bit of sanding to smooth out the spool top, but definitely worth the effort.
I stained it in special walnut stain, and sealed it with three coats of poly.
The holes remain, but I like the character it adds. We could have done an epoxy top to fill the holes, but eh maybe someday.
The middle is a light blue with a lazy susan added on top.
The base was easy, just chalk paint and poly.
Ross and his dad screwed both pieces together, and voila our $20 farmhouse style kitchen table.
