Table Makeover

Well it's been a while since my last post. I haven't had much time this spring to craft, but now that summer's here I'm back on task especially since James is set to move in a few weeks. We're trying to facelift some pieces to go in his new place. This table makeover was done in 1 day and was very easy. I forgot to take a proper before picture and the one at the bottom is all I could find.  But you can see that the table is a bit unfortunate looking especially the color of the fake wood. The top picture is what I ended up with after a little spray paint, yarn and time.

Supplies:
1 can spray paint
Deglosser ($5 at walmart for a nice size bottle)
Yarn
Scissors
Cardboard (for stencil)
Masking tape
Spray adhesive
Paint Brush
Sponge
Protective gloves

What to do:
Part 1--Lamp Shade
To tell the truth the yarn was not part of the original plan. My first draft was to spray paint the shade and use a leaf stencil for pattern. I was not pleased with that result. It looked OK but I thought it could be better. This actually turned out to be a fortunate mistake because now when you turn on the lamp you can see the leaf pattern in the light. So let's pretend it was all on purpose and I'll walk you through on how to get the same result.
1. Make your stencil. I use 6-pack cardboard for mine because it's a nice weight and very accessible in my house.

2. Tape stencil down on lamp shade.

3. Tape grocery sacks on the inside of the lamp so that no paint runs into the inside of the shade.

4. Spray paint shade.

---If you like this look, stop here.-----

5. After paint dries, spray shade with adhesive.

6. Wrap yarn tightly until shade is completely covered. You should leave the ribbon at the top and bottom exposed.

Part II--Table and Light Rod
I used the same color spray paint for both the rod and the wood...Krylon Oil Rubbed Bronze.

1. Take apart table so it's easier to paint.

2. Put on your protective gloves, and saturate a sponge with the deglosser.

3. Sponge the areas you intend to paint. It takes about 10 minutes to dry.

4. Spray paint the wood and the rod. Let dry.

5. Spray paint the wood again. This time, while the paint is still wet take a dry paint brush and do paint strokes over the wood. This creates a smooth look with a hint of distressing.

--Optional: Seal wood.

6. Reassemble table and enjoy your new piece!
