Futon Design DIY

This fall I moved to New York from Kansas City with only what would fit in my Jetta, which means zero furniture. I've had to scrounge around and take what I can get from hand-me-downs. For me my style on my very limited budget is free=fantastic. I've done pretty well. My house now has a kitchen table, a loveseat from the side of the road, TV table, 2 lamps, and a futon. However, it can be a challenge making all the different types of furniture work together. So I've been slowly giving facelifts to some pieces. This futon is the first to receive its makeover. I decided to make a  permanent change to it by painting directly on the cushion. If this is too risky for you then buy a cheap cover to paint on. My mom was in town for the week to go skiing and visit so she was roped into this DIY. It took us 5 hours to finish this project with a couple breaks insisted on by my bf.

Supplies:
Acrylic paint- I used Reeves acrylic in Viridian
Cardboard for your stencil or store bought stencil
paint brush
tape (optional)

What to do:
1. Choose a design to stencil on the area.

2. Test the stencil on a surface similar to what you are painting to see if you need to adjust anything before starting your project. I used an old tea towel to test on.

3. Layout your stencil to get an idea of how much space you would like between designs.

4. Tape down or place your stencils.

5. Start painting.

Tip:
If you get sloppy on some you can fix them by adding a little more water to your brush and freehanding to correct your mistake.
